Advancing Indonesia’s Clean Energy Transition through ISEW 2022

On 10th-14th October 2022, the first Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) was held. The conference on the decarbonization of the energy sector was a hybrid event, held offline at Thamrin Nine Ballroom in Jakarta and online live on the website. Themed ‘Reaching Indonesia’s Net Zero Energy System: Unite for Action and Strategy’, this soon-to-be annual event aimed to bring a greater and more holistic understanding of energy transition topics from various perspectives.  Organized by CASE (Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia) and ICEF (Indonesian Clean Energy Forum) in support of The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany, Bappenas, GIZ, and IESR, the program focused on the current conditions of Indonesia’s energy and the steps needed to shift from coal to cleaner energy sources.

The program lasted for five days and it was conducted in such manner that each day’s agenda connected with the other four. The agenda explored Indonesia’s Net-Zero Emission strategy and its international implication in light of the ongoing energy crisis, challenges, and various approaches to transitioning into cleaner energy and ensuring a just transition, until narrating the transition itself. Attended by governmental figures from Bappenas, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources; private and state-owned-enterprises such as PLN and GoT, experts from universities, and even journalists, ISEW provided a thorough and engaging discussion in achieving clean energy transition in Indonesia and other southeast Asian countries. This discussion provided valuable insight for RDI, especially into the renewable energy and emission reduction (REER) cluster. Bearing clean energy transition as one of its pillars, REER of RDI is always on the lookout for opportunities of enforcing energy transition and clean energy technologies.
