Sumba island represents as a prominent example of a region with large potential of
renewable energy sources for electricity generation through RE (Renewable Energy).
According to reports from Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), Sumba
has electrification rate of 50.9% of which 20.9% is fulfilled through RE generation
(MEMR, 2019). Therefore, active participation from various stakeholders in aiming to
increase the island’s electrification ratio to 95% by 2025 was initiated through
collaborative project namely Sumba Iconic Island (Sumba Iconic Island Development
Team, 2012). The project’s development encapsulates a variety of factors that
would promote and cultivate the renewable energy growth within Sumba island –
from legal framework and economic considerations to social improvement , – while
simultaneously aiming to meet energy needs and targets.
Aligning with the Sumba Iconic Island project, Resilience Development Initiative (RDI)
from Indonesia, Leeds University from the United Kingdom, CREEC from Uganda, and
Dar Es Salam University from Tanzania collaborated on research project titled
Creating Resilient Sustainable Microgrids through Hybrid Renewable Energy System
(CRESUM-HYRES). The purpose of this research is to develop and validate the design
of holistic microgrids with hybrid systems intended for rural areas in developing
countries. Therefore, this research project chose Sumba as a role model in making
NRE technology as well as looking at the development of renewable energy and
energy conservation (NREEC) in Sumba, especially in terms of: (i) social-demographic
findings, (ii) economic implications by considering communities’ willingness to pay,
(iii) biofuel as potential for NRE, and (iv) stakeholder analysis.
The national workshop 2019 with the theme of Clean and Affordable Renewable
Energy for Sustainable Rural and Remote Areas through Microgrids serves as a
platform to gather related stakeholders along with local, national, and international
academicians. Therefore, stakeholders involved directly in improving and bolstering
the sustainable renewable energy initiative in Sumba island, such as Hivos, Bappeda
and local communities represented by respective head of villages and local
champions, will also be participating in this workshop to testify on their experience
with renewable energy in Sumba island itself. In addition, central government
stakeholders e.g. like ESDM and Bappenas will also be present to disseminate their
data on implementing renewable energy implementation in Indonesia, especially in
remote and rural areas including alike Sumba Island.
Through this workshop, All of the participants from all levels will be involved in
direct discussions and giving recommendations to bolster renewable energy
technology development in rural and remote areas, which in this case is Sumba
Island in East Nusa Tenggara. In addition, this workshop also represents as
prominent opportunity for South-to-South cooperation (Indonesia, Tanzania and
Uganda) between developing countries in looking for placing renewable energy at
the forefront of their respective electrification efforts and development. Ultimately,
through international attendance and collaboration, this workshop is expected to
contribute to global issues, especially those in regards of climate change and clean
energy transition in sustaining growing global population. Therefore, the
recommendations produced throughout the workshop will align with the outputs of
our Creating Resilient Sustainable Microgrids through Hybrid Renewable Energy
System (CRESUM-HYRES) research project.
